Very nice article! If I may suggest another factor, land area, as a determinant.

India has 4x the population of US, sitting on 1/3rd the land mass. Since last mile connectivity is impossible with public transport in the US, cars (and until recently, cheap fuel) makes sense.

For smaller countries like India, it is imperative to go the public transport way, unless we hope to all own cars, and live in a traffic jam.
